It's also highly possible that the church was the one that made the Crystal that evolves and controls monsters and even that "Leader" guy. Perhaps they used that like a slave collar to manipulate the Hero of the past and control his power for their own. The old Blacksmith was probably the only one who could break the crystal like MC did back during the previous battle. And so the church decided to publicly ruin the blacksmith before the truth could be known about them.
