I read that because the Japanese had nothing like pancakes and maple syrup, when they saw it in USA media they assumed it was pancakes and honey. Then they became the norm over there, and most Japanese (in japan) still don't know that maple syrup is not the same as honey. I later had this confirmed by a friend who visited japan and found it was true when his host family served him an "american" breakfast.
